Hawaii’s population also has access to relatively strong healthcare through the state’s employer mandate, a diverse dietary tradition that includes many health-promoting foods, and cultural practices that may contribute to health independent of the natural environment.
Disentangling these factors requires research designs that most existing studies haven’t fully achieved. What the research does consistently show is that the elements Hawaii’s environment provides in abundance, blue space access, opportunities for outdoor activity, nature exposure, and the social connection that outdoor culture facilitates, are individually and collectively associated with better health outcomes in populations that have access to them.
